Devin Murphy - Samoan History and Geography

Devin will begin his Ph.D. work in Anthropology in 2017 at the University of Hawaii. Devins 2013 thesis, entitled “All Becomes One in the Basin of the Waterfall: Dialectics and Multiple Trajectories of Samoan History before the year 1900”, explores the geopolitical history of Samoa, a remote Polynesian island chain, and was an honorable mention for The Library Undergraduate Prize in 2013. The thesis explores the uneven development of capitalism throughout the South Pacific, challenges notions of Western historicization, and offers insight into the dialectical nature two historical narratives — Western and Samoan — that often come into conflict and mutually influence one another.
Devin recently completed a 6-month apprenticeship at UC Santa Cruz’s Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems.
